Brittany's Read of A Song of Ice and Fire Series (Spoilers)

I'm ready. Are you? Be prepared to get blown away. I get to relive Daenerys too. Don't worry if you don't like her. Most don't think much on her. I'm the only one in the forums that's crazy about her.Her House of Targaryen is the most romantic to me. Get ready for tons of detail. I couldn't keep track of all the houses and characters and political intrigue. Did you read that GRRM fashioned this epic after the medieval history of the War of the Roses? I have the illustrated book on the series and it has fantastic pictures. I posted some in my thread but you can't look because of spoilers.

Cool. I'll be reading A CLASH OF KINGS probably around the beginning of December. That would make it one year after reading A GAME OF THRONES almost exactly, which is my plan, to read them a year apart, in hopes that the guy starts writing faster and I won't have to wait quite so long as everyone else.

I'm actually very excited to get back into Westeros.

A GAME OF THRONES

I ADORE this book so far! I've read to page 141. I skipped class this morning to go get it directly and sat in the parking lot at Borders in south Charlotte until like, 2pm reading it. I'm so excited. I'll list characters and the Houses individually to allow for more detail...

So I hear AGOT has 8 main characters for this book alone repeated in chapters titled by names such as Bran, Catelyn, Daenerys, etc. Concentrating a great deal upon the House Stark. Introductions:

HOUSE BARATHEON

-Youngest of the Great Houses.
-Founder: Orys Baratheon, rumored to be Aegon the Dragon's bastard brother (there are SOOOO many bastards in this book).
-One of Aegon's fiercest commanders; when he defeated and slew Argilac the Arrogant, Aegon rewarded him with Argilac's castle, lands, and daughter.
-Wed Argilac's daughter and adopted the banner, honors, and words of her line.
-Sigil is a crowned stag, black, on a golden field.

-King Robert Baratheon, the First of His Name

HOUSE GREYJOY

-Descent from Grey King of the Age of Heroes. Legend says he ruled not only the western isles, but the sea itself and took a mermaid to wife. (Coolness.)
-Lord Vickon Greyjoy of Pyke chosen to have primacy among the lords.

Characters we know from the HOUSE GREYJOY:

Words: We Do Not Sow. (LAME!!!)

HOUSE MARTELL

-Nymeria (warrior queen of the Rhoyne) took Lord Mors Martell to husband. Used her help to vanquish other competition to single-handedly rule Dorne.
-Dornish rulers style themselves "Prince" instead of "King".
-Titles and lands pass to eldest child, not eldest male.
-Never conquered by Aegon the Dragon.
-Joined to realm by marriage and treaty, never by the sword.
-Banner is a red sun pierced by a golden spear.

Characters we know from the HOUSE MARTELL:

-Doran Nymeros Martell, Lord of Sunspear, Prince of Dorne
---his wife, Mellario, of the Free City of Norvos
-----their children:

-Princess Arianne, their eldest daughter, heir to Sunspear

Words: Unbowed, Unbend, Unbroken. (Finally a cool one.)

The Old Dynasty: HOUSE TARGARYEN

-Jaehaerys I, the Old King, the Conciliator, Aenys' son
-Viserys I, grandson to Jaehaerys
-Aegon II, eldest son of Viserys, [Aegon II's ascent was disputed by his sister Rhaenyra, a year his elder. Both perished in the war between them, called by singers the Dance of the Dragons.]
-Aegon III, the Dragonbane, Rahenyra's son, [The last of the Targaryen dragons died during the reign of Aegon III.]
-Daeron I, the Young Dragon, the Boy King, eldest son of Aegon III, [Daeron conquered Dorne, but was unable to hold it, and died young.]
-Baelor I, the Beloved, the Blessed, septon and king, second son of Aegon III
-Viserys II, younger brother of Aegon III
-Aegon IV, the Unworthy, eldest son of Viserys, [His younger brother, Prince Aemon the Dragonknight, was champion and some say lover to Queen Naerys.]
-Daeron II, Queen Naerys' son, by ASegon or Aemon, [Daeron brought Dorne into the realm by wedding the Dornish princess Myriah.]

-Aegon V, the Unlikely, Maekar's fourth son
-Jaehaerys II, second son of Aegon the Unlikely
-Aerys II, the Mad King, only son to Jaehaerys

Therein the line of the dragons kings ended, when Aerys II was dethroned and killed, along with his heir, the crown prince Rhaegar Targaryen, slain by Robert Baratheon on the Trident.

The Last Targaryens

-King Aerys Targaryen, the Second of His Name, slain by Jaime Lannister during the Sack of King's Landing
---his sister and wife, Queen Rahella, of HOUSE TARGARYEN, died in childbed on Dragonstone
-----their children:

-Prince Rhaegar, heir to the Iron Throne, slain by Robert Baratheon on the Trident
---his wife, Princess Elia, of HOUSE MARTELL, slain during the Sack of King's Landing
-----their children:

-Princess Rhaenys, a young girl, slain during the Sack of King's Landing
-Prince Aegon, a babe, slain during the Sack of King's Landing

-Prince Viserys, styling himself Viserys, the Third of His Name, Lord of the Seven Kingdoms, called the Beggar King
-Princess Daenerys, called Daenerys Stormborn, 13

Words: Fire and Blood.

***For now I did not add knights, court retainers, or councils of each House, but if need be I will come back and add the names and titles in at a later time...this is just a rough outline of characters in each house to spark memory a bit.***

Since some of you have been to back here, I've been editing the same first post and adding more and more detail as I go along, so when you come back to this thread, make sure you read my first post again because there is TONS of detail that I am adding slowly (there's so much of it) LOL...I'm working on my summary of the story thus far now...up to page 141...now that I'm finished with the HOUSE and familial aspect of my post.

Re: Brittany's Read of A Song of Ice and Fire Series (Spoilers)

Postby Brittany_Lauren on Fri Oct 23, 2009 7:06 pm

So I decided to leave the family history separate for reference material. I just get sheer joy out of posting these long detailed posts. I'm a nerd. I love family history and stuff!!! I loveeeeeeeee going over the different Houses and seeing who is married to whom, etc.

Okay...finally, the REAL moment you've all been waiting for: my current summary of A GAME OF THRONES up until page 141. Brace yourself, I'm sparing no one my opinions, insults, observations, and conspiracy theories. You know how I roll by now, right? Never fear, I have no abandoned Goodkind or SoT, I am merely reading them both in harmonious ecstasy. I'm in love with Fantasy/Sci-Fi. I need to get together with someone and write my own epic 10,000 page-per-book fantasy saga about something. HEHEHEHEHE. Here goes.

In the prologue, we are introduced to Gared, Ser Waymar Royce, and Will. Okay, I have to say first of all...why is Ser Waymar Royce a Night Watch??? He's the youngest son to an ancient house with too many heirs, apparently. Interesting. I wonder why he chose to be a Night Watch. Apparently they are hunting a crew of wildling raiders. I find it extremely weird and unsettling how Will was sent ahead since he was the quietest tracker, or poacher, and found the wildling camp to be still and quiet with the people just sitting around dead still like they were sleeping almost. WEIRD. I have a theory now. JUST OCCURED TO ME AS I WAS TYPING THAT LAST SENTENCE. GO ME. I knew something was going to happen as soon as Ser Waymar Royce made Will climb the tree to spy on the camp. Suddenly Will saw that the bodies of the wildlings were gone. The weapons were still there, though. WEIRDER STILL. Then he suddenly sees out of the corner of his eye the nearly milky white translucent looking Others slinking through the woods towards Ser Waymar. He supposedly wanted to call out a warning, but if he did, it meant his life. What a coward. I loved how Ser Waymar looked at the Others when they acted aggressively and said "Dance with me then" when they fought him. I loved that. AWESOME. I felt so badly for him, however, when he was essentially massacred. I couldn't believe that Will was such a selfish coward...I mean, honestly you could have at least warned the guy. When Will waited a while and finally climbed down, he discovered Ser Waymar dead, duh. Will looked around for the broken shards of Ser Waymar's sword to take back as proof of what happened. Suddenly he turned around and saw Ser Waymar standing over him. CREEPY. Ser Waymar's right eye was bright blue, just like the Others' eyes were, and he grabbed Will by the throat...Ser Waymar's touch was icy cold. HMMMM interesting. My thought is that maybe the wildlings disappeared and became like Ser Waymar? It would make sense since the Others just showed up out of nowhere so near to where Will and company were. Also, that thought is concluded by Ser Waymar himself turning into an Other...what else could be possibly be? Very interesting. I loved the prologue.

Chapter one or BRAN opens the book up following the prologue with a young boy of 7, Bran. Bran is Lord Eddard (Ned) Stark's son going with his father and his brothers for the first time to witness an execution. Eddard was executing a man, a deserter of the Night Watch, with the sword "Ice". The blade of "Ice" was forged with Valyrian steel, "spell-forged and dark as smoke." Theon Greyjoy, Eddard's ward annoys me greatly...laughing at some guy getting executed. Poor taste. I am in love with Jon Snow, bastard son of Eddard Stark! He is so cool. I love how kind he is to Bran and Robb, even though he is a bastard and they are his half-brothers. I was so excited when they came across the direwolves! I was so glad they got to keep the puppies!

The next chapter, CATELYN, tells of how Eddard's long-time friend, King Robert Baratheon and his Queen are coming to visit due to the death of Lord Jon Arryan, husband to Catelyn's sister Lysa. Robert's queen is of the HOUSE LANNISTER, not thought of too kindly by the HOUSE STARK.

The third chapter, DAENERYS opens with Dany, or Princess Daenerys and her brother talking about her being given over to some Kahl Drogo for marriage. Her brother Viserys (I HATEEEEE HIM!!!) threatens her by telling her that if she doesn't, she will awaken the dragon. What a loser. He takes this dragon stuff a BIT TOO FAR with his anger level. All because he wants the land that is rightfully his back...by pimping out his sister! What a douche! Seriously, few things make me madder. I was steaming when I read this: "We go home with an army, sweet sister. With Khal Drogo's army, that is how we go home. And if you must wed him and bed him for that, you will." "I'd let his whole khalasar f*** you if need be, sweet sister, all forty thousand men, and their horses too if that was what it took to get my army. Be grateful it is only Drogo. In time you may even learn to like him. Now dry your eyes. Illyrio is bringing him over, and he will not see you crying." I want to kill him. ASAP.

EDDARD, the fourth chapter, starts with King Robert arriving with his whole crew. I love the comparisons that Ned makes in his mind about Robert over the years...how he used to be a valiant warrior and now he's older and fat LOL. Robert is obsessed with young fair maidens, too. LOL. I see that as a constantly recurring theme for GRRM...hahaha weird. It was ridiculous for the Queen to start throwing a fit because Robert wanted to go to the crypts to pay respects to Ned's family and Ned's sister that was dead that he was in love with...soo sad. Why does everybody get raped in this book?! Explain. I couldn't believe when I read that Rhaegar hurt Ned's sister...I was so taken aback. Then again I don't usually expect stuff like that so often in a book. I thought SoT was bad with Demmin Nass. Ned is also asked to become the new Hand of the King in the stead of Jon Arryan, recently deceased. I really do like Ned. He seems to be a genuinely nice character who will do anything for his duty as a husband, father, and friend...I hope things turn out well for him and the STARK House. Except Catelyn. Others take her! LOL. I couldn't believe they were already talking about betrothing Sansa and Robert's son Joffrey!!! Good NIGHT above these people get started early!

The fifth chapter, JON. I love the character of Jon Snow. I even love that he's a bastard. It shows the generosity of Ned's heart for taking him home with him and proclaiming before the whole North that Jon was his son. I'm in love with his direwolf Ghost. I thought it was foreshadowing or symbolic of something the fact that Jon was able to have the albino wolf pup Ghost...something to consider for later. I love Uncle Benjen...I'm glad when he agrees to let Jon become a Night Watch. Bless his heart he wouldn't have a chance at anything else in life. I felt so badly for him when he was being made fun of at the welcome banquet. I was glad that Tyrion helped him feel better when he went outside, though.

CATELYN, sixth chapter. Maester Luwin knocks at the door and presents Lord and Lady Stark a wooden box with a lens in it. He informs Lady Stark that there is a letter inside from her sister, for her eyes only. When Catelyn opens the letter, she is informed that her sister Lysa believes the Lannisters to be involved with the death of her husband Jon Arryan - by murdering him. I also found it interesting how she destroyed the letter before anyone else could read it...hmmm could she make up some stuff? POSSIBLY. She doesn't like the HOUSE LANNISTER that much. I don't understand her hatred towards Jon Snow, the bastard son of Eddard. Sure, he isn't hers, but it's not like Jon himself can help what he is. I would be angry at Ned, too, if I were her over the fact that my husband fathered a bastard child...but I don't get why her anger isn't directed towards her husband anymore and is solely let loose on Jon. It's so unfair and ridiculous. As a mother and a more mature woman in authority, she should know better than to treat a human being with such indignity. I lost all respect for Catelyn when I realized how she was towards Jon. What an ass. I am thinking that Ned's keeping Jon's mother's name secret will play a role later on, as well. I'm curious to know who his mother is... Ned decides to accept the position as Hand of the King to King Robert and travel south...he will take Sansa, Bran, and Arya with him to the south.

I absolutely love ARYA!!! In the seventh chapter, it shows her sewing and her stitches being crooked. I love how she is a tomboy and hates sewing. I love how she sasses her tutor, too. LOL!!! I love the relationship she has with Jon. Awesome.

In the eighth chapter, BRAN, it tells of him and his love for climbing and how he overheard the Queen Cersei and her twin Jaime discussing Bran's father, Ned. I was so sad for Bran for seeing those two going at it. Imagine! Brother and sister? AND TWINS, NONETHELESS! I was like OMG GROSS!!! Sickkkkk! I hate incest! I was sooooo mad when they threw him out of the castle, too for seeing him. They need to die, fast...add those two to my hate/hit list as well!

I LOVE TYRION! In the ninth chapter, you really see his disdain for his siblings. LOL he cracks me up. I also love how he sits and reads a lot as well.

I hated chapter 10 so much, JON, when Catelyn told him that it should have been him instead of Bran that was unconscious and injured. I couldn't believe it. I wanted to wring her neck right then!!! I am glad he's going to be a Night Watch now...he wouldn't want to be at that castle with her anymore than I'd share my bedroom with a giant tarantula. I loved the sword he gave Arya and how they named it "Needle" LMAO!!!

I was sooooooo worried for DAENERYS in chapter 11 on her wedding night. I was glad whenever Drogo presented her with gifts and the people were nice to her...I loved the horse he gave her! I thought it was so sweet...he gave her a horse with a mane to match her hair - awww! He is sweet, even if the only word he knows is "No". LOL I was cracking up so much when they rode off to consumate the marriage and he kept saying "no". :goodone: I was soooo glad he was gentle with her and that she was the one who said it was okay for him to touch her...thank goodness! I couldn't handle a bad rape scene!!!

In chapter 12, EDDARD, the King and Ned ride on horseback in the morning and discuss the past...I find out that Robert is the one who killed Daenerys' and Viserys' ancestor...interesting. I was glad that Ned was trying to get him to calm down. I hate war!!! I also am really beginning to like Daenerys and hope nothing bad happens to her. I couldn't believe that Robert really wants to kill her...LAME! She's only 13. BULLY. I found it interesting, too, that Jaime sat on the throne that belonged to Robert for a time until Robert could take it...Kingslayer for sure. I found it interesting, also, how he pledged allegiance to the HOUSE TARGARYEN and then turns around and is a traitor. He needs to die, immediately.

I thought it was so funny how in chapter 13 TYRION was trying so hard to not show how cold and miserable he was when they were riding to the north to the Wall...it cracked me up. He's such a good guy it seems. I love his fascination with dragons, too! I think he and Jon will end up being good friends, hopefully. I sense some inner rage with Jon...wouldn't you have it if people kept throwing in your face that you were a bastard?! I hope he doesn't turn out to be bad. I have a halfway hope that Jon and Daenerys will end up together...LOL I'm pathetic!!!

CATELYN pisses me off. In Chapter 14 she is soooo pathetic over Bran...she didn't even consider her youngest, Rickon, or her eldest, Robb when they needed her the most! What a ninny. I was glad when she finally bucked up and decided to go to the south herself to investigate her sister's accusation. I'm pretty convinced that with the slime Jaime is that the Lord Arryan was murdered by him. JERK. WHAT WAS UP WITH HER ALMOST GETTING KILLED?!?!?!? Weird. I can't believe they would go to all those lengths to kill Bran for what he saw...pathetic. I hate evil people.

In chapter 15 (which I'm a couple pages into) SANSA cracks me up with her little girl swooniness over Prince Joffrey...he's such a little toad! LOL she's not bad, she's just oblivious to anything going on around her except her direwolf Lady...(lol cute name) and Prince Joffrey. I love this book!!!

Well, that's where I stopped...hope this was good...I'll pick up more later!!!

Muy excellente! I'm recommending this to WhiteWolf before he reads A CLASH OF KINGS so he can get a nice good refresher. Thanks for taking the time and putting all this hard work into posting your thoughts/summaries of what happens. You have very good initial judgments on characters. The best part of this series is that the characters grow and change yet they are still the same person.

Actually, my favorite part of the series is that there are so many characters that some die in the first book, some last the entire series, some are introduced in the second book and die in the fourth, or are introduced in the third and are still alive, ad naseum. Pretty much ANYTHING GOES. It's just so massive and real and so much fun to think about; what if this character met this character, or were here while this event were occurring, or were still alive now, etc. There are still hundreds of characters for you to meet, and places. Littlefinger is coming.

I can't wait for you to read more!

I love Jon Snow too. You're just like me. I want a Jon and Dany "connection" too. I felt so bad for her and everything she's had to endure. Especially with her brother...he's so mean but he's all she has. She tries so hard to please him. She has such a noble and naive nature. And I loved Drogo too. He loves her. I loved their wedding night! And I like the middle eastern theme he has around him. Dany has one of the most awesome chapters in this book. You'll get to see why I was blown away.

Pay attention to the special relationship each child develops with their direwolf. It's so cool. Did you catch the scene where Ned was in the wood with the tree that was white with red eyes. It reminds me of Jon's direwolf Ghost. And when you are through, I want to discuss a theory I have about Jon's "bastard" heritage. It's full of intrigue.

Tyrion will amaze you. He's so darn funny too. It's like he's the only sane one of the family. The thing that's so awesome is all the POVs you get to discover. When GRRM lets you get into the head of characters you've never had the chance, it makes your head spin with all your preconceived notions.

I couldn't believe it when Jaime shoved Bran out the window. Bran is the sweetest little boy. He brings tears to my eyes several times.

I can't stand King Robert. He doesn't deserve a fine man like Ned for a friend.

Sansa made me mad in this book. She's a classic teen.

Catelyn was cruel. I didn't like her for a while after that scene with Jon. Now that's the kind of jealousy that really pisses me off.

Arya is a little warrior. Her relationship with Jon is very special and I liked those scenes too.
I am inclined to believe in parallel worlds filled with darkbound Snow and Odd adventures.

Here's 3 pictures from my book for you to enjoy. If you don't want them in your thread, I can delete them so they won't take up space.

NO DON'T DELETE THE PICTURES! THEY ARE SOOOO COOL! I google image the characters from all the books I read just to get a feel for what they look like and see if they're like how I imagine them to be. I'm a dork. If you have more pics, TOTALLY POST THEM! They are great! Jaime looks soooo damn arrogant in that picture LOL...and Cersei looks like she's pretty hot waiting for Jaime...LOL EWW. Thanks for those pics! I really love them!

I did notice a correlation with the white tree and red eyes...I thought it was cool/weird at the same time. I'm really starting to like Drogo, too. I don't think (or at least the vibe I get) about him being a bad guy...he seems to have a gentle nature that is good for Dany - she hasn't been exposed to that enough. Even though she does seem naive and young in these chapters, you get an underlying sense of power and determination in her personality...especially when you read what she thinks to herself to make herself feel better and give herself confidence...it's so cool. I also think her dragon heritage lends to a quiet strength as well...I know she'll be an awesome character. LOL I have a HUGE list of characters I hate and a list of those I love. I love this series so far!!!
